Political Theory

Please start by watching this video.

The other day I found this video sitting on my dashboard on tumblr, a different blogging website similar to WordPress.  What really amazed me about this video is how the viewer has no idea until the end what the video is trying to accomplish.  The best thing about this soon-to-be advertisement is that this is a love story.  Anyone who has fallen in love before can relate to this video.  The ending of the video had me and more than two million other viewers surprised, some in a great way, others in a terrible way.  This video has gained that many views in only the past four days!

GetUp! Australia is the not-for-profit group that supported this commercial and also supports some other causes such as creating climate regulations and treating refugees with respect. The reason they have released this video among others is in order to raise awareness of their operations.  They are especially trying to raise awareness behind their efforts to end marriage discrimination because they have a petition online that they are planning to present to the Australian Labor Party next week.  Although it’s important for GetUp! to get many signatures in general, this group needs to get them before the ALP takes a vote regarding whether or not they should try to end marriage discrimination (Gooner 1).

There are many NPOs out there that represent so many different “faction groups” that James Madison refers to in “Federalist No. 10.”  These faction groups according to Madison are “number of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adversed to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community.”  There are many citizens who have signed the petitions, protested, and even supplied money in order to strongly support their cause.  James Madison also mentions, “There are two methods of curing the mischiefs of faction: the one, by removing its causes; the other, by controlling its effects.”    Faction groups such as Get Up! Australia seem to not stop trying until their success has been satisfied.  James Madison doesn’t seem like he would like any NPOs today.  He would hope to dispel this  faction group by only appeasing the group’s demands.  There are many different NPOs that can be found online that support hundreds of causes.  Find one to support.  What is your reaction to the video?  What is the best method to dispel a faction group?

I am quite surpirsed this post has not gotten a lot of attention yet. Initially, I was anticipating a stereotypical, ending of husband and wife and was taken back by the end to say the least. I think this advertisement resonates in the American context due to many states taking strides of passing gay marriage legislation.

I think an advertisement like this speaks very loudly to the gay community. With all connotations associated with marriage rights, there is no reason why this should not become a common scene in the new american hosuehold. In other words, we shouldnt be surpised at the end of this video. We should have the same reaction we would if a female appeared from behind the camera.
