Are We the Only Nation?

Political Theory

Have you ever wondered what a nation is? In one of my courses this semester we have discussed the makings of a nation. There are a few components to becoming a nation. A nation is a community of people who share a common language, culture, ethnicity, descent, and/or history, and sometimes a common territory and government. Now, we live in a nation, the United States of America. We are one of the most powerful nations in the world. But did we ever think there could be another United States. Europe is attempting to create a mega-nation with the countries of the European Union. The European Union is an economic and political union of 27 countries in Europe. The European Union was established in 1993.

The European Union has all the making of a nation, but how easy is that. The EU has a flag, a national anthem, currency, and political leaders. The EU wants to combine 27 countries into one nation, but they are forgetting a few things. These 27 countries are called member states. In the U.S. we have individual states, that have their own local government, but everyone in the U.S. follows one government system, has one official language, and has a history together. To take these member states and create this same system is almost impossible. Each member state already has their own culture, language, government, and history. So, how can they expect everyone to come together when they believe their country is the best? The only way to make this work is to erase everyone’s identity and start fresh, but how can they expect to erase thousands and thousands years of history from all of these members’ states. Why would anyone want to erase their identity?

It seems the EU wants to recreate a United States but on a bigger scale. Marx’s view on political socialism is that state ownership of the means of production and that communism is the disappearance of all property as well as government institutions. Do you believe the European Union is trying to establish this from Marx’s point of view? What kind of system would this be pertaining to Marx’s view on Socialism, Communism, and Capitalism. If the EU was to succeed how do you think this would affect the U.S.? Can the EU actually form this nation? Will this nation work? Why or Why not? Will the rest of the world allow this to happen? How would Marx’s feel about this?
